Anselm Reyle Biography

Anselm Reyle is a contemporary German artist whose innovative work has significantly impacted the modern art scene. Born on February 12, 1970, in Tübingen, Germany, Reyle has become known for his large-scale abstract paintings and found-object sculptures that challenge and expand the boundaries of traditional art forms. Reyle's journey into the art world began with his education at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, followed by further studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, under the tutelage of artist Helmut Dorner. His time at these institutions was pivotal, allowing him to develop his artistic voice and explore various mediums. Despite initial struggles with institutional education, Reyle found a liberating environment at the Karlsruhe academy, which was less dogmatic and more conducive to his creative exploration. In 1997, Reyle moved to Berlin, a city that has since become both his home and the central hub of his artistic activities. There, he established a studio cooperation with fellow artists John Bock, Dieter Detzner, Berta Fischer, and Michel Majerus. This collaborative environment fostered a sense of community and shared artistic pursuit. From 1999 to 2001, Reyle worked with Claus Andersen and Dirk Bell at the artists' co-operative gallery "Andersen's Wohnung" and "Montparnasse." Reyle's academic contributions include serving as a guest professor at various prestigious German art institutions before becoming a professor in Drawing/Painting at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK Hamburg) in 2009. His commitment to education reflects his belief in nurturing the next generation of artists. The artist's work is characterized by a fascination with the clichés and forms of modernism, as well as an exploration of taste within contemporary art. Reyle's African sculptures series, for instance, features bronze casts coated with chrome derived from kitschy items found in African tourist shops. These sculptures are modified to resemble the work of renowned Modernist sculptors, creating a dialogue between cultural commodification and artistic homage. One of Reyle's most celebrated series is his "foil paintings," which are created using foil arranged in colored perspex boxes. These works captivate the viewer's visual and tactile senses while simultaneously denying any possibility of physical interaction. The dynamic surfaces of these paintings emphasize their objecthood and spatial presence, contrasting fragile folded foil forms with rigid geometric structures. Reyle's "stripe paintings" are another notable series, where he systematically deconstructs the art historical cliché of uniform vertical stripes. He introduces disruptive elements, such as folds in the foil or a cut stripe at the pictorial plane's edge, to challenge the viewer's expectations. Throughout his career, Reyle has experimented with a wide range of materials, including acrylic medium, automotive lacquer, and everyday urban refuse. By recontextualizing these materials, he invites viewers to shift between recognizing individual elements and experiencing alienation due to their new setting. Reyle's work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including prestigious venues like Tate Modern in London and Palazzo Grassi in Venice. His solo exhibitions have been held at institutions such as the Modern Institute in Glasgow, Galerie Almine Rech in Paris, and Kunsthalle Zurich. Despite his success, Reyle has also experienced the volatility of the art market. In 2014, he took a hiatus from art production, reflecting on his practice and the direction of his work. This period of introspection led to a renewed approach to his art, emphasizing a more spontaneous and open process, as seen in his collaboration with artist Franz West. Reyle's art is not just a visual experience but also a commentary on the remnants of industrial and consumer society. His work encapsulates the spirit of his time, using art as a personal language and form of expression that continues to evolve and inspire.
